Today i'm listening to "from Grace" by Thomas Dybdahl

I heard about his really horrible story today, how he lost his wife and newborn baby in the space of a few weeks. That's pretty hard, emotionally. It's the motive behind many of his songs, which is what makes them so beautiful, and sometimes can actually bring you to tears. This song brings me to tears, but strangely, not in a sad way..

i find comfort in sadness..

Today i'm listening to "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum

I'd rather hurt than feel nothing at all..

I hate when it gets okay to be sad, okay to feel down. When it becomes comforting to be sad. Story of my life.

Yes, i've been away! It happens time to time..

Anyway, today i'm listening to "Home" by Foo Fighters

Not only has my time away given me a chance to reflect (yes, something i do fairly often..) but it's given me a chance to miss home. You know the saying "absence makes the heart grow fonder"? Well, it's true. I find missing home gives me a chance to really appreciate what i have. I even missed every ridiculously cheesy quote on my wall.. Which, looking at them right now, it reminds me of who i was when i put them up there in the first place, and what a dark place i was in, and how today, i'm completely different. But as many will tell you, when you've been in that place for a long time, you carry it around pretty much for the rest of your life whether it be as a distant memory in the back of your mind, or a very clear one.
 So it's pretty much the title in itself with this song for me. There's nothing better.

Today i'm listening to "Piece of my Heart" by Janis Joplin

Florence Welch has actually spoke of Janis Joplin, citing her as an influence on her own music, and quoting from the interview:

"I think she really sums up the idea that soul is about putting your pain into something beautiful."

It did get me wondering, you know, what really is soul? Obviously i'm not meaning the genre.. although to describe the genre, take the quote from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame soul is, "music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm and blues into a form of funky, secular testifying." Not quite the sort of soul we're meaning here.

When people say, "put your heart and soul into it" they mean, quite obviously, to put everything you have into it. Maybe soul is more about having this passion for what you do. This leads you back to Janis Joplin, who ripped through every lyric in her songs with such great passion and soul in her voice. She put everything she had into it.. no?

Well i think it's safe to say that Florence had it pretty bang on, because that's what great music is.. the pain felt by the artist translated into song..but i still think to have soul is to have passion. And what's life without that?

Today i'm listening to "Shake It Out" by Florence + The Machine

 There's something about this song that just makes you want to open your arms out wide and sing along at the top of your voice..

 Today i'm listening to "What Tomorrow Brings" by Badly Drawn Boy

 Considering how busy i've actually been for the last two weeks, i've still had so much time to think But er -- when i say think, i mean more "thinking through"..

 You get to a stage in your life, when yeah, everything's going so well, and you're happy, but it's like, there's always something at the back of your mind. Yes, you're happy, but you're alone. Yes you're enjoying life, but will it last?

 Negative perspective or what? I can't understand how i can't just be happy. I love everything in life, and i want to do it all. In my head i'm constantly thinking about all the things i could do, and can do. I just want to do it all, like now..

 This is where todays song comes in, because it's an old cliche of "tomorrow is a new day" but it's true (obviously), you wake up in a different mood, you do something different (unless you're some recluse too afraid to step out your front door..) but most importantly, you're perspective can change. Overnight. So how you felt the day before can pretty much be yesterdays news. Live for tomorrow. Live for what will come. The only reason i'm saying this, is because, this (and music of course) is THE single thing keeping me going.

Now or never to do everything you wanna do guys..

This is just the sweetest song. And the lyrics are so lovely..
Old friendships fade away, love falls apart But you've not spent a single day outside my heart And, there's just one more dream that I have left for you I hope you're smiling when he turns around and says "I do"

He seems to make it sound so easy to move on and still be happy for an ex or a former friend. It should be like this, but bitterness and jealousy always manages to make an appearance..

Today i'm listening to "The Sun and Moon" by Cursive

The sun and moon are a pretty long way away from each other, creating a distance from things, and people, just reflects the hurt. It doesn't heal..

The melody is at the hands of the pianist.

My love of piano has pretty much taken over the last couple of weeks. And this piece just caputures so much beauty from the piano itself. Ludovico Einaudi is my piano hero.. not kidding, i do actually have one of those..

It's amazing, no matter how much rock or punk i listen to (which is a lot!) piano always will be my first love when it comes to music. It's so stripped down and simple, exposing every part of you, but also holding some sort of mystery, because piano music has such a mysterious, if not, slightly distant sound.
Because i play myself, i always imagine myself at the piano hearing this song, which gives me some kind of weird connection.
 Yet again, i am stunned at the ongoing mysterious ways of music..
